Standing tall towards the blue heavens from the lush jungles of south-western Sri Lanka is the 7362 foot (2243 meter) peak named Sri Pada, the 'Holy Footprint'. Famously known as Adam's Peak, the mountain has the unique characteristic of being sacred to the followers of four major religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. It is also referred to as “Samanala Kanda” - 'Butterfly Mountain' because of the scores of small butterflies that fly from all across the island to die upon the sacred mountain. This mystic pilgrimage destination, not only famous for its impression of the foot print at the summit but also due to its remarkable location, which can be seen from the sea visible from three days sails. Naturally, back in the early days, many of the seafarers ensnared with the pyramidal zenith wrote of it as "the highest mountain in the world" though it’s not even the highest peak in Sri Lanka. If you wish to climb the peak, make sure to time it so that you can witness the sunrise from the mountain top – scene of pure mesmerisation.
