This park is the most popular bird sanctuary and eco-tourism attraction in Sri Lanka. SRI Lanka records more than 430 species of birds and this park is a home for more than 200 species of endemic, resident and migrant birds. During April to July ten thousands of birds migrate to Kumana. So that period is the best time to visit kumana for bird watching. Asian Open bill, White-breasted Water hen, Lesser Whistling Glossy Ibis, Purple Heron, Great Egret, Indian Pond Heron, Weathercock, Purple Swamp hen, Duck Black-crowned Night Heron, Intermediate Egret are some birds who migrate in large flocks. The park also shelters for mammals, reptiles and other species of animals.
