Sinharaja rain forest is the famous and largest tropical rain forest situated in south west of Sri Lanka which is undisturbed. This has been identified as a biosphere reserve and world heritage by UNESCO in 1989. There are many entrances to the forest from Kalawana, Deniyaya and Neluwa. The only way to get in the jungle is by foot, where there are excellent park guides or freelance guides available in many hotels and the permit has t be taken from the forest department to walk in the forest. The forest is boarded by Koskulana Ganga in north and Gin Ganga in south which provides the life for the flora and fauna. Specialty of the forest is that 60% of the trees and plants in the forest are endemic to Sri Lanka. It is a home for many types of mammals, reptiles, bird etc. But cannot see more animals like in parks located in dry zones. Best ti me visit is August to September and January to April.
