According to Mahavamsa ("Great Chronicle", Pali Mahāvaṃsa), Anuradhapura was the first capital of Sri Lanka during the great king Dutugamunu (දුටුගැමුණු Duṭugämuṇu). Under his reign, Anuradhapura was the center for the Theravada Buddhism for many centuries.

Lunch in local restaurant

After being lost in the epoch of Sri Lankan great kings, let’s climb the peak of  Mihinthale during the dusk admiring the stunning panorama. Minhinthale is a mountain peak near Anuradhapura, where the Buddhism was established in Sri Lanka by Mihindu Arahath who is the son of Indian emperor Ashoka. According to the history, Mihindu came to Sri Lanka from India on the full moon poya Day of the month Posson (June) and met King Devanampiyatissa and preached the  Buddhist doctrine.

The ruins of the Royal Palace, the Assembly hall, Shiva Devale, Twin ponds, Elephant pond, Vatadage and much more will drag you in a glorious past. Lastly, the Gal Vihara is the pure magic of all. The four Buddha sculptures carved out of monolithic stone will leave you spellbound!

Lunch in the local restaurant.

In the evening we will visit the fortress of Sigiriya. According to the legends, the creative mind behind the pleasure palace cum fortress named Sigiriya was a usurper named King Kashyapa, who walled his own father alive and stole the throne from the rightful heir Prince Moggalana. Once Moggalana retreated to South India to gather troops King Kashyapa moved the kingdom from Anuradhapura to Sigiriya, building his fortress cum pleasure palace on the summit of this huge rock. Keeping aside his rather disturbing acts, one cannot hide the fact that he is a genius in planning out the architecture of the entire kingdom, which still to this date baffles archaeologists for the complexities of the irrigation and many other frontiers.

It is said that the site plan combined concepts of symmetry and asymmetry to deliberately intertwine the man-made geometrical and natural forms of the natural settings. Apart from the baffling construction, one should not miss the elaborative frescoes and mirror wall, which is said to be polished with so much effort that the stone wall reflected like a mirror. Nominated to be the 8th wonder of the world, Sigiriya should be a definite stop on your holiday in Sri Lanka.
